Summer student - Coromandel catchments (in memory of Arthur Hinds)

 Summer student role

Waikato Regional Council, Coromandel Zone, fund a role for a summer student to work from our Whitianga office and assist council staff with the delivery of river and catchment management work.

This role is available for students studying geography/earth science, environmental science, natural resource management or another related tertiary programme. Students will be employed by Waikato Regional Council on a fixed term, full-time employment agreement, running for a 3–3.5 month period over summer.

The 2023-24 summer student role opened for applications Friday 2 August 2024 and closed Sunday 18 August 2024.

Information for applicants

It is expected the summer student role will open annually for applications early August to late August. Applicants will be required to:

  • submit a curriculum vitae highlighting their relevant skills
  • provide contact details of a personal referee
  • be available for a short interview and associated assessments
  • provide copies of academic records.

About Arthur Hinds

Image - Arthur Hinds with trap Arthur Hinds (June 2, 1946 – September 23, 2017) was a notable conservationist who led one of New Zealand's most successful kiwi protection projects and numerous conservation efforts across the Waikato and Coromandel.

He served many years as a Waikato Conservation Board member in a strong association with DOC. He was a Waikato regional councillor for the Coromandel constituency and chair of the council's Advisory Committee for Regional Environment (ACRE).

Arthur, a Whenuakite farmer, was passionate about conservation and supporting young people's learning around it.

He leaves behind a legacy in conservation and has left an indelible impact on the peninsula, as well as the regional community.

The following are among Arthur’s contributions:

  • co-founding and chairing the Whenuakite Kiwi Care Group with the Department of Conservation
  • serving on and chairing the Waikato Conservation Board
  • serving on the Coromandel Catchment Committee
  • serving on the Advisory Committee for Regional Environment (ACRE)
  • supporting the Waikato Biodiversity Forum
  • supporting the Maungatautari Sanctuary Mountain project
  • serving on and chairing the Te Whanganui-A-Hei (Cathedral Cove) Marine Reserve Committee.
