Transport Emissions Reduction Working Group

The Regional Transport Committee has set a target in the Regional Land Transport Plan to reduce carbon emissions from the transport sector by a minimum of 30 per cent by 2030 from 2018/19 levels.

To keep a focus on ensuring the Waikato region meets this target and contributes to meeting national objectives and working towards a net zero carbon system by 2050 the Regional Transport Committee has established the Regional Transport Emissions Reduction Working Group.

The working group will provide the political oversight and direction to a programme of activities identified in the supporting Emissions Reduction Action Plan. Membership of the Working Group is made up of members drawn from the Regional Transport Committee, with the Working Group reporting progress back to the RTC.

Waikato Regional Transport Emission Model

Waikato  Regional  Council  has  commissioned  the  consultant  firm  MRCagney  to  develop  the  Waikato Regional  Transport  Emission  Model.  This  model  can  be  used  to  determine  the  combination  of interventions that will enable the region to achieve its emission reduction targets.

The model functions as a scenario building tool that enables a user to assess a range of interventions that can contribute towards achieving transport emissions reductions.

The model allows the user to specify input data such as population, trip count, trip length, mode share, fleet electrification, public transport kilometres, and private vehicle emissions factor reduction.

The model compares the base year of 2018 to expected emissions in 2030 based on the adapted inputs of the model. The tool is a valuable aid to help understand what the impact of specific interventions might have on future emissions.
