The Freshwater Fish Spawning and Migration Calendar Report

TR 2007/11

Report: TR 2007/11

Author: Mark Hamer

Abstract

A calendar outlining the timing and duration of the major spawning and migration events of native fish present in the Environment Waikato region was developed. This report outlines how to use the calendar and supplies additional information on the methods used to develop the calendar and the sources of the compiled information. This calendar and report can be used to make informed decisions on the most appropriate times to avoid certain instream activities which are likely to have adverse impacts on the fish communities present.

Once the fish species present in a waterway have been identified, this calendar can be used to identify if those species migrate and therefore need access to the sea as part of their life cycle. When migration is likely to occur, and when and where they are likely to spawn. This calendar should be used with caution however as it covers a large area which is likely to include local variations. Also the migration times are given for coastal streams and rivers, allowances need to be made at locations further inland.
