Rules and safety information

Breaking the rules

Waikato Regional Council maritime officers on patrol can issue infringement notices that can lead to fines of up $200 for people breaking the rules on the water. If you break the rules, you’re not just breaking the law – you could damage property and cause injury or loss of life.

Be a responsible skipper

No matter how big or small the boat, every skipper is responsible for the safety of those on board.

  • Make sure you are familiar with the rules before heading out on the water
  • Ensure you have enough correctly fitting lifejackets for everyone on board
  • Have the right safety equipment and make sure everyone knows where it is stowed and how it works
  • Check the marine weather forecast and tides before going out and get regular updates while on the water
  • Keep a good lookout at all times
  • Avoid alcohol while boating
  • Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back
