Passenger rail

The Waikato Regional Land Transport Plan and Waikato Regional Public Transport Plan both consider passenger rail between the Waikato region and Auckland. Currently investigating passenger rail is a medium to long term priority in the Regional Land Transport Plan. There is a particular focus in the 2015/16 period on looking at the impacts of growth in the north Waikato on transport, and passenger transport will be one consideration.

Hamilton to Auckland rail working group

The Hamilton to Auckland Passenger Rail Working Group was formed by the Waikato Regional Council in August 2010 to investigate options for a Hamilton to Auckland passenger rail service.

The working group comprises membership from Waikato Regional Council, Hamilton  City Council, Waikato District Council, Waipa District Council, NZTA, Kiwirail, Auckland Council, Auckland Transport Authority and Campaign for Better Transport (as an observer).

The working group will report recommendations back to the member organisations by the first week of February 2011.

There is strong community support for a Hamilton-Auckland passenger rail service but a more qualified willingness to pay increased rates to help fund it, according to the results of a survey commissioned by the Waikato Regional Council.

Final Recommendation Report of the Rail Working Party (August 2011)

This report brings together the investigations and findings of the Rail Working Party, and contains their recommendations on the proposed service for the partner councils to consider.
