The wai challenge

Water and its use is a current, important and relevant environmental issue for all of us in New Zealand.

In the Waikato region we have recently experienced flooding and drought, and over time have seen changes to our biodiversity and water quality in many of our local waterways.

Waikato Regional Council's Enviroschools team have a challenge for all schools this year:

The wai challenge - How connected are you to the water/wai in your area?

We have developed a resource kit – the wai tool box- which is going out to all schools in the region.

Kaarl the Kowaro is our local mudfish who is helping schools to take up the challenge. Kaarl and I want schools to send in art work, poems, stories as they work their way through the challenge and all pieces of work go into a draw at the end of the year for a prize.

The following resources are available on this webpage:

This resource encourages school communities to become more connected to the water around them in their natural environment.
It asks schools to explore:

  • the water in their area - identify rivers, streams, swamps  or wetlands
  • water usage
  • water conservation

It encourages schools to take action to protect or improve the water quality around them.

It helps schools:

  • gain understanding of where water comes from and where it goes
  •  identify and explore alternatives to help make a sustainable future for us all and then reflect on what they have achieved and the impact  of their actions.
