River biology monitoring map

Different types of aquatic invertebrates (for example, insects and snails) have different tolerances to pollution. Waikato Regional Council’s monitoring of the types and numbers of aquatic invertebrates tells us about the ecological health of the region’s rivers. Find out how satisfactory the ecological health of our rivers is on the map below.

Location of long-term sites sampled for more that 10 years and over 2009-11, showing sites where macroinvertebrate trend metrics were considered ‘stable’ (no evidence of change over this period; circles), or where increasing (upward pointing triangles) or decreasing (downward pointing triangles) trends were detected in the named metrics (clear and borderline trends combined).
