Waikato Regional Council measures bacteria levels in the water at our sites around the edge of Lake Taupō. E. coli bacteria is a useful indicator of the health risk for human contact recreation activities, such as swimming or water skiing.

We  also measure chlorophyll a, Secchi depth, total phosphorus and total nitrogen at the deep water sampling site near the middle of the lake. We do this to monitor the whole lake’s water quality long-term, and its suitabiliity for plants and animals to live in.

Click on one of the monitoring sites on the map below to find out about water quality in the Lake or click on a site name at the bottom of the page.
