The graph below shows Waikato people’s environmental attitude scores according to the 2000, 2004, 2008, 2013 and 2016 surveys.

  • In 2016, precisely one quarter of people in our region (25 per cent) have pro-ecological attitudes. This is down from 2013 (32 percent) but higher than 2004 (19 per cent) and 2008 (15 per cent).
  • In 2016, the average regional NEP scale score was 23 which was the same score in 2013 and 2000.  Similarly in 2008 the average was 22, and in 2004 it was 21.
  • The proportion of those with mid-ecological attitudes increased to 63 per cent in 2016, up from 57 per cent in 2013 but down from 70 per cent in 2008.
  • Twelve per cent had anti-ecological attitudes in 2016 and 2013, compared with 15 per cent in 2008, 23 per cent in 2004 and 10 per cent in 2000.
