Variation to plan change endorsed by committee
A significant milestone has been reached with the Healthy Rivers Wai Ora Committee today endorsing a variation to a plan to improve the health of the Waikato and Waipā rivers.
The recommendation will now go to a special meeting of Waikato regional councillors being held in Hamilton on Tuesday 27 March.
Over the past year, the council has worked with Pare Hauraki to discuss their concerns and interests in relation to Healthy Rivers/Wai Ora: Proposed Plan Change 1.
A deputation from Pare Hauraki addressed the committee to provide their feedback on the proposed plan change and recommended variation.
Committee co-chair and Waikato regional councillor, Stu Kneebone, acknowledged that Pare Hauraki had worked constructively and in good faith during 2017 to provide feedback on the proposed plan change.
Variation 1 was endorsed unanimously by the committee. The variation reinstates the area in the north-east Waikato that was withdrawn in November 2016.
The variation to the Proposed Plan Change 1 includes:
- amendments to reinstate the previously withdrawn provisions and area
- amendments to key dates for landowners, including dates for registration and providing a Nitrogen Reference Point, as well as for Farm Environment Plans and stock exclusion
- some of the amendments arising from consultation with Pare Hauraki.
If the council adopts the committee’s recommendation when it meets next week, it is expected the variation will be notified for public submission in April. Further information on the variation will then be available at waikatoregion.govt.nz/healthyrivers.
