Field day to offer advice on managing soil and water

Published: 2018-03-21

Farmers and landowners in the west coast catchment are being encouraged to attend a field day to hear ideas on soil conservation and riparian management.

The field day is on Wednesday 4 April at 10.30am in the Waitanguru Hall on Mangaotaki Road. It’s organised by Waikato Regional Council, with support from Beef + Lamb NZ and the Ministry for Primary Industries.

“Managing the margins of waterways helps protect water quality on farmers’ own properties, as well as those downstream,” said sustainable agriculture advisor, Bala Tikkisetty.

“There’s plenty farmers can do to protect stream margins and fresh water, and that’s what they’ll hear about at this field day,” Mr Tikkisetty said.

Guest speakers will cover a range of topics, including the importance of wetlands and sediment traps, soil and geology, and funding options for addressing hill country erosion.

Mr Tikkisetty said there will also be information on the use of dung beetles to reduce contaminants, electric fishing, and an update on Healthy Rivers/Wai Ora: Proposed Plan Change 1.
