Thames student Rebecca Ireland has won an Environment Waikato scholarship to assist with her university qualification in Environmental Studies and Geography.
Rebecca was presented with the Roger Harris Scholarship, valued at $4,000, at this week's Catchment Services Committee meeting. The scholarship is presented to students whose families live in the Waihou Valley Scheme area who are studying engineering or resource management, especially in river and catchment management.
The scholarship marks the contribution of Roger Harris, chief engineer of the then Hauraki Catchment Board between 1959 and 1983, to the development and implementation of the Waihou Valley scheme. Eight students applied for the award.
Rebecca, former Thames High School student, has completed two years at Victoria University studying for a Bachelor of Science majoring in Environmental Studies and Geography, focusing on hydrology. She has been working for Hauraki District Council during university breaks undertaking various projects in water quality and waste water.
She hopes to go into a career in water conservation, resource management or research and education.
