Regional council monitoring elevated waterways on Coromandel

Waikato Regional Council is closely monitoring reports of elevated waterway levels in parts of the Coromandel after heavy rain this morning, although the forecast is for conditions to ease.

At a stream at Kuaotunu, between Matarangi and Whitianga, a council-contracted digger is on standby to clear the stream mouth if there are fresh concerns about it getting blocked, thereby increasing the risk of flooding beside the stream.

The mouth had been cleared by the council several weeks ago but it had become blocked again. The digger was to be used to clear it again this morning but then sand and debris cleared naturally. The digger will remain on the scene in case fresh problems develop.

At Grahams Creek near Tairua there has been some localised flooding of properties beside the creek. Council officers have inspected the area but hope the improved forecast means there will be no more problems in the immediate future.

Council emergency management staff will be keeping a close eye on the situation and urge residents with any concerns to ring 0800 800 401.
