Waikato Regional Council is reminding dairy farmers and others under financial pressure that there are various options for making rates payments to help manage in tight times.

It follows discussion on the issue at the finance committee’s recent meeting.

“We recognise that dairy farmers are facing a significant downturn in the milk payout,” said committee chairwoman Jane Hennebry.

“This means some will be struggling to meet various costs and others could be affected financially by the farmers’ situations.”

Cr Hennebry said the council offered ratepayers the ability to pay off rates by ongoing direct debits, and there were a range of other options to help make payments easier.

“We encourage anyone facing difficulties to contact our rates team to discuss their options.”

The council’s freephone number is 0800 800 401.
