Environment Waikato and other emergency services are cleaning up following a diesel spill from a truck crash near Huntly.

A small amount of the diesel carried on a tanker spilled into the Waikato River after the tanker collided with a truck on Great South Road shortly after 11.30am, splitting the tanker’s side.

Environment Waikato Resource Use Group Manager Chris McLay said it was estimated about 3500 litres of diesel spilled but much of it was contained on the road and within the stormwater system before it reached the river. A stormwater drain was blocked off to contain the diesel.

Staff are out on the river in a boat this afternoon to monitor fish and plant life but have so far not found any major environmental effects.
