A Hamilton water ski zone Environment Waikato opened temporarily last year on the Waikato River will remain open until Easter 2008 after proving a hit with the public.

The council approved an exemption to its Navigation Safety Bylaw on a trial basis last November to open the stretch of water, between Cobham Dr and the Mangaonua Stream, for water skiing.

Signs were erected at boat ramps and on the river bank, and a notice was published in a local newspaper, to inform people of the change.

Staff had monitored the area and feedback had been positive, Environment Waikato’s acting navigation safety manger Shelley Monrad said.

“Overall the temporary towing area is being used on a regular basis and the public are very pleased they can use the area. People have told us the beach area just upstream of the bridge is a good take off area.”

Because there were no safety concerns about the zone, Ms Monrad recommended council extend the exemption until next Easter.

Council approved the move at its monthly meeting in Hamilton last Friday.
