Environment Waikato has provided $1980 to Hamilton’s Southwell School to replant a stand of native bush in the school grounds.
The preparatory boarding school had applied to the Environmental Initiatives Fund for assistance to enhance a 1.6 hectare stand of native bush, which is registered as a native reserve. The bush contains some exotic trees and a number of plant pests and is used as an educational resource by Southwell and other schools and community groups.
A class project began last year with advice from the Department of Conservation on appropriate species and bush management.
The grant will provide 340 appropriate native species and the school is supplying labour to remove pest species.
