Environment Waikato staff deeply shocked by accident

Environment Waikato staff are in shock following an accident involving a contractor at Port Waikato today.

Chief executive Bob Laing said details were still unclear.

“All we know at this stage is the contractor was installing a monitoring system in a tide level recorder on the wharf at Port Waikato when he fell into the river and was swept away. We don’t know what caused him to fall,” Mr Laing said.

“Our first concern is for the family whom I have visited this afternoon. We will continue to offer whatever support we can.”

The Police dive squad was tonight searching for the man.

Mr Laing said Environment Waikato would work with the Police and the Department of Labour to try to establish the cause of the accident.
