Environment Waikato’s Regulatory Committee has recommended pursuing costs against an iwi authority which appealed against the granting of resource consents to upgrade a boat ramp at Waikawau in Thames.

The consents were granted in July last year to upgrade an existing boat launching ramp at the Waikawau river mouth. The decision was appealed by Ngati Maru Iwi Authority in August, but the parties were not informed until December when work had already begun.

The applicants applied to the Court for an order to strike out the appeal on the grounds that the appeal was not served in time. The Court dismissed the appeal and invited applications on costs, which were about $3500 for the Council.

Chairman Jim Howland said the iwi authority had been invited to discuss the matter with Councillors but the offer had not been taken up. The concern was not with the substance of the appeal but the process which had been costly.
