The graph below shows Waikato people’s environmental attitude scores according to the 2000, 2004, 2008, 2013, 2016 and 2019 surveys.

  • In 2019, precisely 40 per cent of people in our region have pro-ecological attitudes. This is the highest it has ever been since monitoring began in 2000 when it was 36 per cent back then and came right down to 25 per cent in 2016.
  • In 2019, the average regional NEP scale score was 23 which was the same score in 2016, 2013 and 2000.  Similarly in 2008 the average was 22, and in 2004 it was 21.
  • The proportion of those with mid-ecological attitudes decreased to 47 per cent in 2019, which is the lowest it has ever been and down from 63 per cent in 2016.
  • Thirteen per cent had anti-ecological attitudes in 2019 which was similar to 2016 and 2013 with 12 per cent, compared with 15 per cent in 2008, 23 per cent in 2004 and 10 per cent in 2000.
