3.8.1 Issue

In addition to the issues identified in Chapter 3.1 of this Plan, drilling can have the following adverse effects:

  1. Drilling below the water table may cause contamination from inappropriate drilling fluids, mixing of previously isolated aquifers and loss of aquifer pressure/level.
  2. Contamination of soils by inappropriate drilling fluids to levels that present significant risk to human health or the wider environment.
  3. Adverse effects on geothermal features, geothermal fluid/pressure and blow-outs in geothermal wells.
